If I download the SP4 installer itself then it asks for a product and license key to install it. Autodesk's Application Manager doesn't list or see my Maya installation. I need at least SP1 for some pymel fixes.
I would not recommend updating a service pack unless you specifically need to address issues resolved by a service pack. It is not worth the risk of keeping you from working. If it isn't broken, don't fix it. There is no requirement to be running the latest service pack software if it offers you no benefit.
I wanted to point out that the license serial number and product key you would have received from the Autodesk Education Community for Maya is the same one that you would use to install and activate the Maya SP4.
